Abstract:

The first thing you learn when you get started with Drupal is that creating a website is now nothing like anything you've done before. How do you structure the content? How do you figure out which modules you need to do what? How do blocks work again? This session will go through some of the mistakes made and lessons learned from the presenter's first attempt at a Drupal site, and will present ideas for creating a balanced and efficient workflow for basic sites.

Agenda

  1. Getting started: breaking down content and navigation
  2. Moving forward: figuring out blocks, content types and views
  3. Next steps: What goes on the home page, and how does Drupal get it there?
  4. The home stretch: permissions, users and Random Annoying Configuration Steps
  5. Questions?

Goals

  1. Understand how Drupal structures your content before you show concepts to a client;
  2. Learn how to structure your original concepts based on the limitations of Drupal's framework (without making your site look too "Drupaly");
  3. Create a realistic and efficient workflow with a minimum of /head-desk.

Resources

I found O'Reilly Press's "Using Drupal" book immensely helpful doing my first few sites.

You should be able to install and basically configure a site, and have a handle on working with themes. This is really more of a theory and project management session than a hands-on coding session.
